1. How did you get started in the music industry?
I clearly remember my unofficial entrance into the music industry occurring on a fall day when I was fourteen right after soccer practice. As I got in the car to go home, my mom and sister informed me that they’d signed me up to audition for a group of talent scouts that had come to town. The audition lead to my participation in the 2014 ARTS International Showcase in Orlando, Florida. It was a great experience, and though I didn’t win any physical trophies, I came away with a few really great connections.
2. Who are your musical inspirations?
I find people and groups like The Beatles, Elton John, and Stevie Nicks, to be really inspiring for their lyrics and musicality. I grew up listening to country music, so Toby Keith, Reba Mcentire, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will always have a special place in my heart. Lately, I’ve been really into modern innovative singers songwriters like LP, Lorde, and Sara Bareilles. Their unique vocals paired with the interesting turns of phrase present in their lyrics, capture a lot of what I aspire to be. My ambition is to express myself as purely and powerfully as they do.
3. Can you tell us about your song “Monochrome Town”?
“Monochrome Town” was one of my first introductions into collaborative song writing. I wrote it with the help of two co writers, Kayliann and Doug Lowe. I remember being excited about the creative process behind it, I thought it expressed what I was trying to say really well.
4. What inspired it?
“Monochrome Town” is less about a physical place and more so about the emotional state I was in at the time. Turning this dreary mental space I was living in into a tangible town, a monochrome town, helped me to vocalize the feelings I was having, of stagnancy, and helplessness. It’s an analogy I thought more people could connect with.
5. What is the recording process like?
For me, it was a really welcoming and creative environment. I was lucky to work with a great producer out of Nashville, Tom Michael, who made the process, which was quite foreign to me, accessible and engaging. Before going into the studio I sent Tom basic recordings (voice memos courtesy of the Lowe’s) of the songs, and from there he messed around with larger scale ideas for melody. When I got to Nashville we made final decisions on what the sound would be and recorded vocals, guitar, and bass tracks. As a whole the process was very efficient and fun; we’d try different approaches and change things up as we went.
6. Do you have any other music being released in the near future?
I just recently released my second single, “Painted Eagle,” which has a much more poppy feel, in early August. It’s available on a variety of online platforms like iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud, Google Play, and more! As for more new music, I’ve been putting work into writing songs on my own that I’m really proud of. There’s nothing concrete yet, I’m excited to let my current two singles have their time in the spotlight.
7. Do you have any other upcoming projects that your fans can look forward to?
Right now I’m working to write original songs on my own that I can be really proud of and potentially record in the future. Other than that, I’m working on live performance, radio exposure, and tentative collaborations. I have a Facebook page @brookpricemusic, where I post about new things I’m doing.
