Interview With Lovey James! (@TheLoveyJames)
1. How did you get your start in music?
I got my start in music and being a recording artist through dance. Before actually having the opportunity to be a young pop artist I was a competitive dancer for 7 years. I danced all styles including Ballet, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Acro, you name it. My dance teacher was on Broadway and suggested that I enter in the vocal category of our next competition for fun. From here I started winning scholarships and money for my talent that I didn’t even know I had. For fun as well I entered a vocal completion in my local city called Hillsboro Teen Idol and I won. From here I went on to the bigger completion in Portland, called Portland Teen Idol, I was a runner up and was introduced to a recording Artist who was a judge by the name of Geoff Byrd. Geoff introduced me to my producer now, Steve, who introduced me to my manager, Michelle Parimore and from here the three of us and my mom of course have been working as a team to make my dreams come true.
2. Who or what inspires your music?
I have many musical inspirations including; Justin Timberlake because he is a musical genius and an amazing performer. Ariana Grande because she is not afraid to be herself and sing her vocals live, which was one of the main surprises I had when performing live shows, the fact that many performers don’t actually sing their music live, but instead the lip sync. I respect Ariana so much for that. I also love Katy Perry for her style, as well as Selena Gomez, Adam Levine, and Lady Gaga.
3. Can you tell us about your songs “I Can Do Anything” and “Rollercoaster?”
Yes of course! I just recently recorded two brand new singles which I am more than excited to release. The first song I recorded was “I Can Do Anything” which I like to describe as a power ballad almost like Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball” The song was written by me, my producer Steve Sundholm, and Sam Martin who wrote the song “Daylight” For Maroon 5. The message behind the song is pure inspiration for young teens. In the song I am almost talking to myself and telling myself how important it is to not let other people’s opinions phase me and to instead reach for my dreams and not let anyone or anything stop me.
The second song “Rollercoaster” is a total dance song. It’s the type of song that literally makes you want to jump up and dance your heart out. The song was written and produced by Def Trend who I had the opportunity to write with for the very first tine and the experience was awesome. This new song is so fun and is the kind of song that a more “Rebellious Lovey” would sing. I’m super excited to release both these songs this upcoming month.
4. What is your favorite part about writing and recording?
My favorite part about writing and recording is making whatever it is that I am doing, my own. I sing covers along with my Original music which can be found on my YouTube account, and the best thing about the covers is that they’re me. I put my own twist and flavor into everything that I sing, so that it’s different and recognizable. My hopes for this is that one day people will be able to acknowledge my sound, like they hear a song even if it’s not an original and say “Hey! That’s Lovey!” That would be so amazing!
5. How would you describe your music?
I love this question! I like to describe my music as Pop with personality, all the songs that I sing are catchy and fun they can also be described as Pop Dance especially my new Single “Rollercoaster”. Even though I do sing pop I am definitely not afraid to sing a ballad. Because I was trained in Broadway I have a wide vocal range and love to show it off. Some of the songs that I enjoy singing are “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars, the female version, as well as “Say Something” Which is my most recent cover that I have uploaded to YouTube so make sure to check that out as well.
6. What is your favorite song of yours?
My favorite song of my own is probably “Who You Are” which I released last year because the song is an inspirational song that mentions bullying and how you shouldn’t ever change your looks, your personality, anything just because of personal opinions. I am positive that no matter who you are people will love you for that, so it’s not worth trying to be someone that you’re not.
7. What are your other hobbies?
As I mentioned before I was a competitive dancer for 7 years so dancing is definitely one of my favorite things to do besides singing. When I am performing live shows I enjoy incorporating the two to make a really amazing performance. I also LOVE shopping, if that is even considered a hobby, but with the amount of time that I spending doing so, I’m going to say it is. I adore shopping for outfits that are trendy and cute. I could spend hours searching and putting together the perfect outfit for an upcoming performance or Red Carpet. I also am a Makeup Addict, no matter what store we are in Name Brand or Drugstore I can find makeup to buy.
8. Do you have any upcoming shows, music or projects?
This month of March is very busy for me and I love that! Already I have done a performance for the Press Play Tour in Virginia Beach, on March 22nd I will apart of Playlist Live in Orlando Florida which I am super excited about, because I have never performed there and there is going to be so many other amazing artists and You Tubers that I can’t wait to meet. I also have a performance on March 29th in Portland, Oregon, my hometown, for another tour that I am apart of called the FANatics Tour. Besides shows and performances I am releasing both of my new singles this month as well as a duet with Keenan Cahill, the YouTube sensation. We recorded a new song called “Back to Us” which I feature in; the song is available for pre-order as of March 10th, so I am excited to release that song and video too1
