Interview With Survival Kit!(@SurvivalKitGA)
- How did you form as a band?
Andrew left college at UGA after 2 years and finished school in West Georgia to save money. Allen and him started jamming and writing instrumental rock, but decided that we wanted to sing. Travis lived in NC for work and we decided to do everything we could to get him home to make this project happen. After a few months, he moved in with Allen. We started practicing in a shed at Chewy’s place and the rest is history.
- How did you come up with the band name?
It took a few months actually. It needed to be perfect. When the name was finally posted to our group chat, we knew it was right. We want our lives to be spent writing and performing. Without music, we wouldn’t be very happy. It’s our Survival Kit.
- What was your first song?
Travis & Andrew sat in Chewy’s shed and wrote a song called “Wolf” one rainy day. We knew immediately that we had something special writing together. It’s only gotten better since that day. You can find that song on Bandcamp if you want to hear it.
- How have you grown as a band?
We’ve played music with each other on and off for almost 10 years. We’ve been friends since the beginning, but this recent tour really brought us closer together. We had the chance to be more honest and open than we’ve ever been and I think it set us up to be very successful in the future. We want to keep it as the four of us as long as possible because it really is something special to have in a music career. People you can trust and grow with.
- Who are your musical influences?
Oh boy. Say Anything, Panic!, Circa Survive, Nirvana, Cage The Elephant, The Story So Far, Ice Nine Kills…it gets weirder.
- Can you tell us about your single “Valedictorian” that just dropped?
“Valedictorian,” is somewhat of a peek back in history for a brother of one of the members. Something Trav experienced firsthand in seeing, and though the situation dealt a ton of negativity into our atmosphere, we felt releasing that old sitch through the glory of song was the best thing we could do. Here’s to you, Red Dress.
- What was the recording process like?
We’ve worked with Aaron Pace since the Hard Work & Dedication EP. He helps us keep an open mind and brain storm to get the best final product. He’s never written anything for us, but he has influenced the way that we write a lot. We love that man.
- What has the fan reaction been like to the song?
It’s been great! Tons of positive feedback and streaming in all kinds of different places. It’s already moving up the charts on our Spotify. The coolest thing is that we’re developing fans in France and UK. We’re impacting people all over the world and that is a great feeling.
- Do you have any other upcoming projects that your fans can look forward to?
Just shows & recording in the southeast for now. Travis and Andrew will be flying around the country networking and meeting people to learn more about the different opportunities in the music industry. We can probably set up some impromptu acoustic sets if you contact us!
