We recently had the chance to chat with singer Maggie Szabo about getting started in the entertainment industry, “Don’t Give Up”, upcoming projects, and more!

1. How did you get your start in the entertainment industry?

I grew up in a small town in Ontario, Canada and I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t in love with music! I sang anywhere I could when I was a little kid, and I started writing poetry which turned into songs.

2. How would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as soulful pop.

3. Can you tell us about your song “Don’t Give Up”?

Don’t Give Up is my latest single! I wrote it with my two great friends Stefan Lit and Chaz Mason here in LA!

4. What was the inspiration for the song?

I was inspired by the lyric idea ‘don’t give up on love,’ and that’s where the song started. It’s a feeling we’ve all felt before, and the lyrics and melody came very naturally. I wanted the lyrics to be really honest, which is where the first line of the verse came from; “everyone knows this world isn’t perfect”. Once I finished recording the song, I knew that the video had to stand for something, and I wanted it to stand for something I truly felt for. I decided I wanted to make a video that shed light on transgender issues particularly trans kids.  So many trans kids are being discarded by their family, and are forced to live on the streets. I wanted the spirit of the video to genuinely portray the story of a teenager struggling with their gender identity.

5. What was the music video creating process like?

It was such a great experience because unlike my other videos, I was behind the camera for a lot of the shooting. It was so cool to experience it that way because I was able to really see the video come together from a different perspective.

6. How is this video different from others that you’ve worked on in the past?

This is the first time I’ve really felt like I’ve taken a stand for something with a music video.

7. What has the fan reaction been like to the song and the video?

I am so thrilled at the reaction I am getting from people.   The amount of love and support we have received has been so uplifting, and I am thankful that I am able to show my support to the LGBTQ community through my music.

8. Do you have any other upcoming projects?

Always! I am currently working on collaborations with some DJs and am also planning the release of my next single!
