The latest news and interviews about Hollywood's rising stars

We recently had the chance to chat with singer Maiya about getting her start in the entertainment industry, her single “No Stopping Me Now”, and more!

1. How did you get your start in the entertainment industry?

Music has been a part of my life as far back as I can remember.  I started singing when I was four years old with the choir at my church. Since I loved singing and performing, my parents would sign me up for any opportunities to sing that came up. When I was five I started singing country song covers and New Mexico spanish music at local festivals and I learned the National Anthem performed it at rodeos, UNM Lobo games, Albuquerque Isotopes games and other events. When I was six years old l sang with some local high school Mariachi Groups.  I also won a few talent shows in Albuquerque and one in Los Angeles called IPOP.  At 11, I was invited to sing with the Symphony Orchestra of Albuquerque at a Youth Concert where I had to learn a classical song in Latin. I continue to sing at local festivals, restaurants, and anywhere I get the opportunity to sing.

2. What was your first song?

Sidelines was the first song I recorded and released. However, I started making up melodies and writing a few lyrics when I was about 7 years old. I have to work with some of them more but I hope to record these at some point as well.

3. How would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as something catchy, fun, but still real. I think my sound and vibe is somewhere in between Camila Cabello, Little Mix, and Demi Lovato.

4. Who are your favorite artists?

I love artists that are genuine and good to their fans.  It helps that they are awesome singers too! Some of my favorites are:

Selena Quintanilla- When I was little I would watch the movie about her life and just seeing her singing and dancing inspired me to be a singer and performer.

Selena Gomez- In her interviews and media clips, she comes across as a sweet and genuine person and she is also a good performer.

Alicia Keys-she is so amazing at singing and playing piano and she’s just one of my favorites to listen to. She also has a super sweet and great personality.

Adele- She is such an amazing vocalist and has a great personality, I loved what she did at the Grammys last year when she did the tribute for George Michael and she stopped the performance when she messed up and restarted, I thought that showed a lot of class because she could’ve just kept going but she wanted to do the tribute right and respectfully,

Whitney Houston- one of my favorite singers, I love all of her songs so much!!

5. What inspired your single “No Stopping Me Now”?

There is a lot going on in the world and in people’s lives right now and i think that we could all use  a sort of anthem to help remind us of the good times and to help us keep moving forward toward a better future.

6. How is it different from your other music?

While Sidelines is a high energy bop that one could sing and dance to, No Stopping Me Now is has a laid back vibe that inspires one to get back to the good times and just enjoy life.

7. What was the recording process like?

The recording process was absolutely amazing! It was rather time consuming, but i enjoyed every second of it. We had to record each verse, pre chorus, and chorus around ten to twenty times each. We spent about twelve hours there the first day but to me it only seemed like two. I told my mom that I could live in the studio, I loved it so much.

8. What can you tell us about “Sidelines”?

Although Sidelines is a love song, I wrote it about not giving up and how you always have a chance or a shot at anything that you can do, so don’t give up or give in to anything.

9. Do you have any other upcoming projects you can share with us?

I’ll be opening soon at a show in Albuquerque for a national recording artist. I am extremely excited about that. I am also working on doing more live shows and on writing more songs.

10. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not singing?

I am in Taekwondo and on a competition Sparring Team.  I also love to watch Netflix, read books, and hang out with my friends.

11. Do you have any summer plans?

I will be performing as much as I can. I plan to play at local restaurants here in the Albuquerque area. I also plan to do some volunteer work and start working on college scholarship applications.

12. If you could collaborate with any other artist, who would it be and why?

I would love to collab with many different artists, but currently Camila Cabello has been giving us all some major jams and i really like her whole vibe. I think it would be a lot of fun to collab with her.

13. What are your goals for 2018?

My goals for 2018 are to write more music, record some more songs, and hopefully  get record deal. Besides focusing on my music, my goals would include getting lots of scholarships and deciding on a college.
