We recently had the chance to chat with Kedrick Brown about filming “Tales From The Hood 2”, working in the entertainment industry, upcoming projects, and more!
- What was the audition process like for Tales From The Hood 2?
The audition process is always weird. You’re doing your best to become a character you have only six or seven lines on from the script. So you really have to start by making a strong acting decision on who the character is. You can only truly committ to a character if you know who they are. So once the character is created, I do the best I can with the audition sides and hope for the best. Once I got the callback notice from my agents, I immediately went back to the audition sides and made sure I was well refreshed on the script. The callback opportunity is one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Because of my schedule, I had to fly into New Orleans, rent a car for a few hours, and then fly back out.
2. What was your reaction when you found out you booked the part?
Whenever I look at my phone and see the words “agent” I’m always excited to pickup. I’m more of an internal excitement type of guy, but I always make sure I say “Thank You God!” out loud. Once I was cast, I went straight into the work. I took the script and made sure I understood it in its entirety. The work is never done until you hear the word wrapped.
3. How would you describe your character?
Have you ever met someone in life who makes the type of decisions that confirms that common sense ain’t so common…Yea that’s Booze. As I was reading the script, I found myself saying, “why would you do that!!!” quite a bit.
4. How is he different to other characters that you’ve portrayed in the past?
Most of the characters I’ve portrayed whether it be world famous music producer Alonzo Williams (Surviving Compton), desperate and eager slave Lou (Underground), or spindly drug addict Breezy (Greenleaf) just to name a few, they all have such a drastic contrast in characterization but share one thing in common…they are human. Although Booze is aggressive and dumb, he is still a person you can identify with. Everybody knows at least one Booze.
5. What is the film about?
Mr. Simms is Keith David, who will be presenting four horrific stories of lust, greed, pride and politics through tales with demonic dolls, possessed psychics, vengeful vixens and historical ghosts. Mr. Simms’s haunting stories will make you laugh… while you scream. TALES FROM THE HOOD 2 is squarely in the tradition of outrageous, entertaining anthology horror, but it also addresses serious issues with a forceful point of view, just as folklore has done throughout history.
6. What do you think fans are going to take away from the film?
People will laugh, jump in fear, but also be a little excited that the messages in the film are being represented.
7. Did you have a favorite scene to film?
I try and be impartial towards certain parts of the story, but the endings of the 1st and 2nd story make me smile.
8. What was your most memorable moment from set?
So something that really makes this project stand out is the fact that my birthday fell right in the middle of my filming sessions. During one of my scene takes they kept me occupied inside while preparations were being made outside by craft services. When I walked outside the cast and crew were casually standing around talking. Before I knew it, there was a burst out of the Happy Birthday song and cake! Who does’nt love cake! I was truly moved by that gesture.
9. Are you still in contact with the cast?
I am very much still in contact with most of my cast mates and the director. One of the pleasures of being an artist is that when you work on a show or film you all become like family. It is more than likely that we will run into each other again on another set, which makes it kinda like a family reunion. Who doesn’t love family reunions?!!!
10. What do you feel was the most important thing you learned from working on the project?
This is my first time working with CGI so I was super excited!!! Understanding the specifics and how it all works intrigued me a great deal. Watching it all come together is a new experience for me. I was super excited to have that be apart of my shooting sessions.
11. When and where can fans watch Tales From The Hood 2?
Tales from the Hood 2 hits Blu-ray, DVD, Digital and On Demand from Universal 1440 Entertainment October 2, 2018!
12. Are you currently working on any other projects that you’d like to share with us?
I just recently landed a co-starring role on the hit CW Superhero show, Black Lightning. Season 2 begins airing mid-October as well.
