Interview With Marvel’s ‘Luke Cage’ Star Justin Swain (@JSwainOfficial)

- How did you land your role in “Luke Cage?”
I was called into audition in NYC. It was funny because I didn’t know the name of the project I was auditioning for. Everything was top secret and I signed an non-disclosure agreement. So I went in to read and found out I was cast about 3 days later. I still didn’t know what it was but I did some digging and found out it was Luke Cage. It was great!
- What is the show about?
The Marvel/Netflix series follows Luke Cage (Mike Colter), a former convict with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin who now fights crime and corruption in Harlem.
- How is this project different from others that you’ve worked on in the past?
Being a part of a Marvel project is pretty exciting and special. You are part of a gigantic universe. The people on set are really kind and I get to play in a super hero universe every day so that’s really fun too.
- What is a typical day at work like for you?
Well I get in, I go up to my dressing room and wait for a bit and they usually call me into hair and make up. After hair and make up, I go do a walk-through of the scenes to get the lay of the land. After that, you get into costume and wait for them to call you down to set. I usually catch up with other cast members like Simone Missick, who’s amazing, and asked her what’s going on in case there’s anything in the world that I missed. And then we start shooting the scene.
- What is your favorite part about your job?
I think its the fact that I get to play cops and robbers in a comic book world every day. Also working with the other actors on set like Antonique Smith, Simone Missick Mike Colter and Theo Rossi, who are incredibly talented actors. It’s amazing to work and learn from them every day.
- What do you think some people wouldn’t know about the show?
It’s a super hero show but it’s incredibly grounded in the grit of realty. It keeps its soul and explores the character but also doesn’t skimp on some action that the fans are going to love.
- What has been your favorite episode to film so far?
I can’t say anything right now because the season hasn’t come out yet but there’s an episode I got the film where I had some gritty work to do with some of my closest character friends. I found that acting work to be incredibly rewarding.
- When and where can fans watch the show?
Season 2 drops on Netflix on June 22!
- Are you currently working on anything else your fans should look forward to?
There are a couple top secret projects coming up. I can’t say but the audience is going to love them when they come out
