Singer Jennifer Lauren Talks Upcoming Single “Rainin’ In London” In Exclusive Interview

- How did you get your start in singing?
I’ve wanted to become a singer since I saw Céline Dion perform live when I was around 5 years old but never really acted on it growing up because I didn’t feel I was good enough. And to be fair, at the time I definitely was not. No training, no motivation. But when I was 17 a teacher was talking to my class about what our plans were after high school, what school were we going to? Who did we want to become? The actual idea of being anything other than a singer was completely terrifying. My next thought was, “Well if you’re going to be a singer you’d better get good at it.” I started researching vocal teachers that night and booked my first lesson that weekend.
- What was the first song you released?
The very first song I released was a song called “Good For The Weekend”. It was super sassy and confident. It was all about people feeling like you can’t live without them when, yes honey, you can. You were good for the weekend though.
I took it down a while back because my music has definitely evolved since then, but I still hold it close to my heart.
- What was the fan reaction like?
At the time when I released “Good For The Weekend” I was really just starting out. I didn’t have a very large following but the support I got from friends and family and those who were following me online back then was really awesome and pushed me to move forward.
- Who are your musical influences?
So many influences right now! This past year I’ve been falling in love with pop music all over again. My main influences right now continue to be Khalid, Dua Lipa, and most definitely Demi Lovato. I love the cool, chill, positive vibes I get from Khalid, the fun vibey pop from Dua Lipa, and the strong, female, and honest feels I always get from Demi Lovato.
- If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?
This question has me day dreaming of all the possibilities. I would love to collaborate with the artists I mentioned above, Khalid, Dua Lipa, and Demi Lovato. I would also really like to collaborate with Harry Styles. I’ve always thought he had the coolest voice. I think we’d sound really good together. I think collaborating with Julia Michaels and Ed Sheehan would be really cool, too. Listen, the list can go on and on. There are so many incredible artists out there that I would be so incredibly honoured to work with. Ooh, Justin Bieber, too! That would be cool. Can’t wait to see which of these dreams will come true.
- What do you think makes your sound stand out from that of other artists?
I think I bring a fresh vibe to the pop/urban/vibe scene. I think of my music as a darker version of what’s on the radio and playlists. I also think my voice has kind of cool rich tones that are unique. I bring a mix of “I know who I am now” and “I’m still trying to figure it out.”
- Do you have any upcoming projects you’d like to share with us?
Yes! My new single, Rainin’ in London, will be out May 2nd on all platforms. I’ll also be performing at the Drake Underground (Drake’s Hotel) for Canadian Music Week at 7:00 PM in Toronto. I’m also already planning my next single release. It’s got the chillest summer vibes. So so so excited for everything coming up.
- What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I am a major introvert. In my free time I love to just chill, order in some food, and watching Netflix with a couple of my girls of by myself. My version of going out is basically going to dinner at a restaurant or going shopping. And if I’m in Cali, chilling on the beach. I like to keep it simple and relaxed.
