ROYAL Talks Music Video For “Vessel” In Exclusive Interview! (@IamRoyalMusic)
- What can you tell us about “Vessel”?
“Vessel” is an emotionally-driven pop track produced by Luca Fogale and Sean Wharton. It is the first single off of my latest album, Heart of Shadows. The official music video featuring Tiera Skovbye (“Riverdale”, “Once Upon a Time”) and Jordan Connor (“Riverdale”) is out now!
- What is the song about?
I wrote “Vessel” while going through a very difficult time in my life. For years, I had completely dissipated into someone else’s world. When that reality was destroyed, I felt I had no identity or direction. The song goes through those emotions and follows the story of a girl losing someone she loves, and then coming to the realization that without that person in her life, she has no identity.
- What is the concept of the music video?
We wanted to emulate the emotions of isolation, fear and heartbreak that you feel in the song, and translate them into a visual story. So we separated the story into two merging realities. The first being the astronaut, played by Tiera Skovbye, who had been detached from her space ship and was left alone, floating off into space. Then we strung in a series of flashbacks between her and the love of her life, played by Jordan Connor. Tiera comes face to face with her unknown fate, and when she comes to the realization that she may not make it out alive, panic sets in. Suddenly she is taken by beautiful memories between her and Jordan and we see her struggling with the pain of losing him.
- How long did the video take to shoot?
We shot the video in two days, if you can believe it! The first day was all the shots between Jordan and Tiera. Then, the day after our director/editor Riun Garner edited those shots so that we could film the following day and project those memories onto the space helmet, and shoot all of the space scenes. The first day of shooting was a lot of fun. Watching Tiera and Jordan was absolutely incredible. Their on-screen chemistry was off the charts! The second day of filming was very technical and emotional. I definitely cried watching Tiera go through those powerful and sad emotions.
- Are there any behind-the-scenes secrets you can share with us?
This is definitely no secret, but it is very true; Tiera and Jordan are two of the most genuine and kind people you’ll ever meet. The vibe on set was the most respectful and team-oriented that I’ve ever experienced, and I’ve worked on many sets as an extra.
On the space set, I hopped into the space suit while Tiera was in makeup so that the camera crew could get some final test shots in. I was shocked at how heavy the space suit was! So while we were filming, when we had to cut, I would hold the suit up off of Tiera’s shoulders to give her some relief. She is such a champ, and really blew us all away with her emotional delivery.

- What has the fan reaction been like to the song so far?
I’ve been so blown away by the response to the song. “Vessel” landed onto a Spotify curated playlist right after it was released, which generated a lot of attention and surpassed 100,000 streams in no time. As an independent artist, I was beyond excited about this. It happened because people love the song and have been so supportive of it, and for that I am beyond grateful.

I would love the opportunity to collaborate with any of the other talent on “Riverdale”! They are such an incredibly talented cast, and they look like they have a lot of fun working together. I can see it now: “Josie and the Pussycats feat. ROYAL” – can you imagine?! Bring on the cat ears, I’m all in.
